‘SCANDAL’ TAKES AMERICA BY STORM

Comments

First of all, this group is very cool.
And apparently the rest of my comment didn't get posted...

ANYWAY, I'm disappointed I missed Scandal's Chicago show.

Second of all, my real point for posting here...who is the artist currently playing on your blog? I like what I hear, but I don't see an artist name anywhere on the page.

Thanks!

Sounds like a great show indeed! Glad to hear you enjoyed them. How were the other bands? Did Scandal totally steal the show or were there other great ones too? :)

(Also, did you manage to grab me one of those CD's...?)

@Henkka: Yes, the other three bands I was able to see were outstanding. That includes The Emeralds, Ketchup Mania and Detroit7. I had a close encounter with D7 and the famed left-handed, barefooted, amazing guitarist-singer Tomomi (detailed blog at: http://bloggerparty.com/crazy_date_with_j_rock_s_nabana_of_detroit7

However, I ran into a little trouble and missed Petty Booka and The Beaches (Chris stuck around and will likely blog about them).

Concerning Scandal, for high-school kids they played exceptionally well. I was right on top of them and studied their technique. It's solid. The lede guitarist Mami has great potential, being just 17 now. Haruna has the potential to be an Ami Tokito-type of front girl, only she plays guitar and moves very well! The drummer, 16, is off the charts for a kid her age, and in J-rock it's all about the beat.

CDs: Damn they ran out but I am promised some from Hit & Run and will forward one to you asap when I get them. It's just a single, but something.

@Catch: Aoi Teshima is the artist; the song is commonly known as the "Teru Song" and several versions are on YouTube and other places.

Rad, my review is up. I found some great footage of all of the groups at YouTube as well. And have sent friend requests to all of them at MySpace (so far the Beaches and Detroit7 are the first to add me) Great story, and I especially liked your stuff about Detroit7 over at Radreview. BTW, Scandal's CD is actually a CD/DVD of the song Space Ranger. The DVD is a PV plus some random footage of the girls while on tour. Very cool for five bucks! My vote for greatest band of the night is the amazing Ketchup Mania!!!
@Chris: Yes, KM was the best band overall; I just got caught up with D7 and Tomomi. FYI, I'll probably not touch upon The Emeralds or KM in any great detail; your reports are great. As for Petty Booka and The Beaches, I'm looking forward to anything else you have to blog about those groups!

P.S.: T-minus 3 days on H!P Winter 2008 DVD shipments (March 26 I believe) ...

Good to hear. I enjoyed reading your report on Detroit7 too. :) So wait, SCANDAL were the "headliners" but they played first on the show? :o That's a bit unusual! It was cool to see what SCANDAL really looks like in real life, too! Like the traditional schoolgirl outfits. :)

Ah, too bad about the CD's. I look forward to hearing from you if you are able to get some!

Basically, Scandal was the most anticipated group, being so new and young. The tour boss, owner of Benten Tokyo, said it made more sense to put Scandal leading off so they could play all seven of their songs, which wasn't part of the origin al plan. It worked out really well so the Scandal members wouldn't miss their bedtime (!)
Be patient and I'll get the DVD version with a PV along with the "Space Rangers" single. If you'd like, I can e-mail you my mailing address and if you send me a postage-paid, self-addressed bubble envlope I can stick in there and ship it when I get it.

Ah, I see. Well that kind of makes sense then. :) Might've also been because there were probably many there just to see SCANDAL first and foremost, so it'd make sense to have them perform first and not have all the SCANDAL fans ruin the show for fans of the more "obscure" bands performing. :)

Hmmm... that sounds considerably difficult actually, haha. Any chance the plain, good old PayPal would work for you instead?

Oh, yeah, PayPal is fine. But I will need an address to ship.

And I need to know your PayPal email and the amount you need! :) You can probably get my shipping info through PayPal though when I send the payment, right? If not, I'll just email it to you.

I, for one, was there primarily to see Scandal. But I would say that they weren't the biggest draw. From everyone I spoke to I would give that to Detroit7, followed by Petty Booka. As the venue didn't really fill up until the third act, long after Scandal had finished. That said, Scandal was the biggest hit at the "goods" table and had the longest line for autographs. The Emeralds and Petty Booka also did post-set signings, but didn't have as long a line.
From most everyone I talked to, most of the crowd was made up of people who have attended Japan Nite 2008 every year it has hit S.F. — regardless of which bands end up touring. Very few, if any, people seemed to have any idea about Scandal, which is why the promotors moved them up to the start. The heavy hitters were clearly The Emeralds, D7 and KM because, I understand, those bands have been on this tour often over the years.
